Jhandewalan Mata Mandir, nestled in the heart of Delhi near Karol Bagh, is one of the city’s oldest and most revered Hindu shrines. The temple’s name, “Jhandewalan,” originates from the practice of offering prayer flags, known as ‘jhanda,’ which were prevalent during the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s reign. Legend has it that in the 18th century, a devoted cloth merchant named Badri Das discovered the idol of Jhandewali Mata and a stone lingam while digging near a waterfall in the Aravalli range. Following a divine vision, he constructed the temple at the site, and the original idol was consecrated in a subterranean chamber, known as “Maa Gufa Wali.” A replica of the idol was installed at the ground level, referred to as “Maa Jhande Wali”.
